Indian Trail Community Information

Indian Trail was once a Native American territory. The town earned its name from a 17th-century trading route connecting the Waxhaw Indian settlement to Petersburg, Va. Early settlers were Scottish and German recipients of 18th-century land grants. The community was little more than a post office until the early 20th century, when small retail and entertainment establishments began to appear. The population, at that time about 300, consisted primarily of farmers. Hit hard by the Great Depression, Indian Trail didn't experience much in the way of population growth until the 1960s.

Union County Public Schools operates 34 schools throughout the county, serving over 25,000 students. Hemby Bridge and Indian Trail Elementary are the local grade schools, while Sun Valley Middle School serves students in grades sixth through eighth. High school students generally attend Sun Valley High School in nearby Monroe. All Indian Trail schools maintain a student/teacher ratio of less than 20:1.
